Anne Applebaum over de toekomst van Oekraïne – In samenwerking met de stichting Oekraïners in Nederland

Met de boeken Goelag en IJzeren Gordijn vestigde de Amerikaans-Poolse journaliste Anne Applebaum haar naam als expert op het gebied van de geschiedenis van Oost-Europa en de Sovjet-Unie.

Nu, als columnist voor The Washington Post, volgt ze de ontwikkelingen in Centraal en Oost-Europa op de voet. Hoe kijkt Applebaum naar de politieke en maatschappelijke veranderingen in Oekraïne? In De Balie zal Anne Applebaum spreken over de ontwikkelingen in Oekraïne en haar visie uit de doeken doen.
Na afloop van haar lezing interviewt Yoeri Albrecht (directeur De Balie) Anne Applebaum en spreken we met oud-politicus en voormalig secretaris-generaal van de NAVO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

Over Anne Applebaum
De Amerikaans-Poolse journalist en schrijver Anne Applebaum is columnist voor The Washington Post en Slate. Daarnaast is ze directeur van het Transitions Forum bij de Engelse denktank Legatum Institute en verbonden aan het European Center for Policy Analysis. Haar boek Goelag uit 2004 leverde Applebaum de Pulitzerprijs voor non-fictie op. Daarnaast publiceerde zij in 2012 het boek IJzeren Gordijn waarin Applebaum laat zien hoe het communisme de Oostbloklanden in de jaren na de Tweede Wereldoorlog als het ware inlijfde.

With her books Gulag: A History and Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe the American-Polish journalist Anne Applebaum became widely recognized as an expert regarding the history of Eastern Europe and the Sovjet Union.

And still, as a columnist for a.o. The Washington Post, Applebaum comments regularly on the political and societal developments in Central and Eastern Europe. What is her vision on the current developments in Ukraine? Anne Applebaum will discuss this extensively in her talk at De Balie.

Anne Applebaum is an American-Polish journalist and writer. She is currently a syndicated columnist for The Washington Post and Slate, as well as director of the Transitions Forum at the Legatum Institute (London) and adjunct fellow of the European Center for Policy Analysis. Anne is the author of Gulag: A History (2004), which won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 2004, and Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956 (2012), as well as co-author of cookbook From a Polish Country House Kitchen and a recently republished travelogue, Between East and West: Across the Borderlands of Europe.
